Charity Match Report

Bungay played a blinder, as did Bungay who scored a hat trick for Bungay. Sam Delaney (Talk Sport) and Kevin Piper (Football Pundit) found the job of commentating on the historic Bungay v Bungay game both the easiest and most difficult job they had ever done as they struggled to know who made what play for who.

Bungay eventually went 6-4 down late in the second half at Bungay Town Football Club after a corker of a goal from Bungay for Bungay. But a controversial penalty was awarded to Bungay by referee John Bungay when Bungay was wrestled to the ground in the penalty area, but the spot kick was put onto the cross bar by Bungay. The penalty was retaken however after the Bungay keeper, 'Safe Hands' Bungay moved prior to the kick and Bungay placed the ball comfortably into the net to bring Bungay within a goal of equalising.

After the dramatic sending off of Chris Bungay from Australia (he was shown the blue card for swearing, and the yellow and red cards for his moustache) the final goal came within the final minute of the game when Bungay were offered a second controversial penalty for absolutely no reason, taking Bungay to his hat trick, the second of the game and the coveted 'Man of the Match' award that, like the winners cup, had been engraved in advance of the game.

Final score Bungay 6 Bungay 6. There were several substitutions during the game, Bungay off for Bungay for Bungay, Bungay off for Bungay for Bungay, Bungay off for Bungay for Bungay and Bungay off for Bungay for Bungay. The linesmen, mascot, physio and even Doctor were all Bungays, this being the first time in history where an entire game of football was conducted by people of the same name.

The news the event generated for Bungay Town FC, The Beattie Foundation, the match sponsors Beattie McGuinness Bungay and of course for Bungays themselves was huge with an estimated 30 million people aware of the game and it becoming a hot topic of conversation for everyone from the Sun to the Times, from Chris Evans to 'Have I Got News For You', from Sky News to Talk Sport with the story surfacing in Denmark, Spain, Hungary, Belgium, Canada, Australia even Vietnam.
